The eastbound lanes of Interstate I-74 near Shelbyville, Ind. have reopened Friday morning following a deadly semi fire that closed the roadways overnight.
The fiery crash happened near the 103 mile marker, just east of the London Road exit, at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Indiana State Police said the driver of a semi-tractor trailer was traveling eastbound when the tractor crossed into the left lane and sideswiped a passenger car. The driver of the semi overcorrected to the right and sideswiped a guard rail. The driver steered back to the left, crossed highway again and crashed into the median, before flipping over onto the roadway.
Police said the semi was hauling diesel fuel, which immediately burst into flames during the crash.
The driver of the passenger car was able to escape before the fire spread to his vehicle. He did not suffer any injuries but his vehicle was heavily damaged.
