ISP disposes of 1,500 pounds of contaminated food

Indiana State Police prevented a box truck full of contaminated food from endangering consumers Tuesday morning.

According to officials, authorities stopped a northbound box truck near the 50 mile marker on Interstate 69 in Delaware County. An officer inspected the truck and found that its refrigeration unit was not running. The temperatures in the cargo area reached 67 degrees.

State health officials determined the food was unfit for consumption because the cargo area had exceeded 41 degrees. Indiana state code requires nonperishable food to register at or below 41 degrees. Food that exceeds that temperature can promote the growth of salmonella and listeria.

About 1,500 pounds of food was taken to the Randolph County Landfill for disposal.

The driver and U&D Service of Indianapolis were cited for exceeding registered plate weight, no fuel tax permit and a FMCSR violation.

The food had been headed to restaurants in Fort Wayne, Kendallville, Howe and Mishawaka.
