Layoffs begin in Lawrence Friday. The mayor said he has no other choice to keep the city from running out of money by the end of the year.
At Monday’s City Council meeting, members voted to rescind a budget reduction ordinance they passed earlier in the year. That would have led to the firing of 24 EMTs.
The council asked the mayor to use money from the rainy day fund to make up the difference but he won't.
"We can't spend all the way to zero because that's a very dangerous, dangerous thing to do," said Mayor Dean Jessup.
Jessup said some combination of layoffs will have to be pursued.
