A mother accused of leaving her 16-month-old child alone at a Motel 6 in Speedway now faces a felony neglect charge.

On Tuesday, Speedway police arrived at the motel after a witness called saying she had seen a 16-month-old child walk out of a nearby room with no socks or shoes. The children began walking around the parking lot. At that time, the witness gathered up the child and called police.

About 20 minutes later, 32-year-old Talisha Evan arrived, identifying herself as the child’s mother. She told investigators that she and her four children had been staying at the motel. She left the room to get her older gets from the bus stop, but ran out of gas on the way back to the motel. She said she bought gas and snacks for her kids and then made it back to the motel to find police with her baby.

Police learned Evans was on probation through Marion County on a similar incident in which she left a child alone inside an unlocked car. After investigating the most recent case, police approached the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.

Evans faces one count of neglect of a dependent, a Class D felony.
