Muncie, Ind.

Authorities in Muncie raided an animal rescue shelter, seizing 63 dogs and encountering poor conditions.

Animal shelter and health department officials arrived Thursday afternoon at a building in the 3500 block of South Walnut Street.

Muncie Animal Shelter Director Phil Peckinpaugh told Fox59 that the owner of the Adopt A Lab shelter reached an agreement to surrender the animals. In exchange for the voluntary exchange of the pets, officials agreed not to press charges and keep the media away.

Peckinpaugh said it’s often better to get the animals to safety. He admitted that officials didn’t expect to find 63 dogs and the conditions they were being kept in.

Police are keeping members of the media away from the scene as requested by the owner.

According to Muncie's Star Press, the Muncie Animal Shelter also raided the facility in August 2010, saying several Labrador retrievers were in poor conditions.

Those interested in helping the seized dogs may do so by calling the Muncie Animal Shelter at (765) 747-4851.
