A pair of teddy bears rest on the front stoop of 3921 Chateau Drive, where Bryant Steele was found dead by firefighters Sunday morning.
It was just before dawn when neighbors spotted smoke pouring from the split level house on the northeast side.
From the start, Steele’s family has told Fox 59 News that an angry dispute the day before may have played a role in the death.
“I know earlier that day my auntie was there and she seen him arguing with a guy with dreads,” said Joey Cornett, a cousin. “They got into a little slap around…slapping around a few times, and the guy with dreads said, ‘I’ll be back,’ and I guess that’s what he meant.”
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Sergeant Mark Prater confirms detectives are searching for the man with dreadlocks who had been staying at Steele’s house for the past couple weeks.
Prater is not identifying the man.
“He never said anything about nobody threatening him,” said Cornett. “He never had no problems with nobody. He was a kind, loving guy.”
Cornett said he spoke with Steele just a couple hours before the killing, saying that his cousin had been out to a club and was preparing to buy cigarettes with his boyfriend.
Police have cleared the boyfriend of any role in the killing.
Steele’s family thinks the dead man’s circle of friends might know where the man with dreadlocks is now that he has dropped from sight.
“I definitely believe…no…I know someone knows a whole lot more than what we know,” said Cornett.
Anyone with information on the killing of Bryant Steele and the location of his roommate is asked to call IMPD at 317-327-3481.
