"I heard about 10 gunshots,” said Raven Bryant, who lives in the neighborhood. “It had to be about 10...and it was so loud and by then, I ran out my front door. When I was running out, I see the guys Charger; it crashed into the neighbor’s house and it collapsed and he was in there. He was shivering for his life. He was just on the verge of dying right there.”
Detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department found Newton lying on the ground. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The passenger, who is believed to be Newton's brother, was not shot but was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Detectives said he was treated for injuries from flying glass and trauma.
"It's a shame that this happened today, on the Lord's day too," said Darla Faulkner, a resident of the neighborhood.
The Indianapolis 10 Point Coalition, which is a faith-based organization, quickly showed up at 28th Street and Indianapolis Avenue to offer guidance.
"This is not what kids should see,” said Duane White, who is with the coalition. “I mean 'cause we want the youth to change. We want the youth to stay away from the streets not be in 'em.”
As detectives investigated, a fight broke out.
"This is not what most of them want in their community,” said White. “It's not, and they've been begging for a change.”
Detectives said they have received some information from witnesses and the passenger in the car. They are looking for a silver or gray four-door newer model Ford. The car could be a Ford Fusion with Illinois or New York plates.
