Police say underage drinking may be a factor in an accident on the northeast side of Indianapolis early Tuesday morning.  Emergency crews were called to the 6000 block of Welham Road, near 71st Street and Binford Boulevard, after an 18-year-old girl knocked on the front door saying she needed help.

According to police, Madeline Lemke was leaving a party in the neighborhood. As she was leaving, police say a 20-year-old man, who was also at the party, jumped in front of the car trying to prevent Lemke from leaving. Police say Lemke hit the man and dragged him about 25 yards down the road.

The victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition, suffering from broken bones, head injury and road rash.

The victim told the officer he “did not want anyone to drive drunk.”  Police say they could see alcohol on a table inside the house where the party took place.

Detectives arrested Lemke on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, which is considered a class D felony.

Lemke’s bond is set at $2,500.
