The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a homicide after a 21-year-old woman was found dead with a gunshot wound on the west side Monday night.
IMPD officers responded to the Port O’ Call Apartments, located in the 5700 block of Port Au Prince, on a report of a person shot. When police arrived, they found Levita Dorsey suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
Nursing Home, not far from her apartment complex. She left the nursing home after her evening shift around 11 p.m. Monday. Those who knew Dorsey said she lived at the Port O’ Call Apartments to be closer to her job because she did not have a car.
Around 11:30 p.m., police were dispatched to the apartment complex. Police said a caller told 911 dispatchers that the suspect shot Dorsey, checked her pockets and then ran away. Witnesses said a man was seen running northbound from the crime scene after the shooting.
Neighbors said they have seen other crimes on the path Dorsey was walking on. One neighbor said he saw a man get mugged.
“He was walking through here and three guys jumped him and took his money,” said neighbor Rene Garcia.
Dorsey was known as a beloved nurse to the elderly residents at the Lakeview Manor Nursing Home. Now, grieving co-workers, family members and police want answers about her death.
“She was a sweet girl, really was,” said friend Juanise Smith. “[She] didn’t bother anybody. There’s no reason this should have happened to her.
“She was a great person. She had a great sense of humor.”
Smith said she cannot help but struggle with a sense of guilt, losing a co-worker and a friend.
“She walked all the time and most of the time, I would walk with her,” said Smith. “That’s why I’m saying it could have been me, because I walk that way to work. I won’t anymore.”
Lakeview Manor Nursing Home released the following statement Tuesday:
"Based upon third person accounts, we understand that Levita Dorsey, an employee of Lakeview Manor, was tragically killed on January 2, 2012, when she was robbed and shot as she was entering her apartment building. We know no further details. Our thoughts and prayers extend to her family. The loss will be and is profoundly felt by the Lakeview Manor family as well."
Police have not arrested a suspect at this time. Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-8477.
