A local Health Department is taking the owners of an abandoned manufactured home facility to environmental court.
The old Shrum Housing Center located on US 40 and Raceway Road in Marion County, has been turning heads for the wrong reasons for years.
"It's an eyesore," said Danny Soots, who owns Divine Bar-B-Cue down the road. "The longer it goes, the longer it looks bad for the city and for the businesses around here."
The Marion County Health Department has taken action, calling the site a health and safety hazard. Inspectors warned the previous owner, Shrum Housing Center, back in June.
"There was large rubbish and junk, there was high weeds, there was trailers that were abandoned and open and dilapidated," said Lynne Lynch with the Marion County Health Department’s division of Housing and Neighborhood Health.
Inspectors gave Shrum several weeks to clean up, but they later issued a citation because nothing changed.
Shrum eventually sold the property to Storage Express, which has plans to build a new storage facility at the location. The company brought in dumpsters and removed some trailers in August, but progress stalled.
The Marion County Health Department is now taking the case to environmental court in November.
"We'll hope to get action then, or some sort of agreement with the owner to make the corrections at the property," Lynch said.
The previous owner of the property stopped by the area while Fox59 cameras were there on Wednesday. He declined to go on camera, but said that he agrees that progress has moved too slowly.
He said he has paid several citations and promised that they area would be cleaned up in a “couple weeks.”
"The sooner the better," Soots said.
Representatives with Storage Express said that progress on the site stalled because they need salvage titles on the trailers before they can remove them. In the meantime, some just wish they would secure them.
"It's definitely a safety concern with children," Soots said.
"Who knows who goes over there?” Dulin said. “Who knows who stays there? Who knows what's around? You don't know what you're dealing with."
