A medical plane from Grace on Wings in Indianapolis is an answered prayer that will help complete a love story.
“I hadn't prayed in a long time, but I said a prayer,” said Todd Pershing. “I just asked God for some kind of guidance through this.”
In a matter of weeks, Pershing found out both of his parents were dying. It started with a call about his dad.
“My mother called me from Las Vegas and we were told he had a couple heart attacks and few days later I think it was followed by three strokes,” said Pershing.
Todd's father is a former Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer who retired in Las Vegas with his wife Carol five years ago. When he was visiting his dad in the hospital, his mother complained of back pain and he told her to get it check out.
“There's more to it than just back pain,” Pershing said. “And that's when we found out she had terminal cancer.”
She only has weeks to live. Pershing flew his mother back to Indianapolis to be with family, but doctors told him his father was too sick to fly and he needed a medical transport. However, that would cost thousands of dollars, so Pershing prayed.
“Losing two parents with a logistical issue of 1,800 miles and not being able to bring them together is just a mountain,” said Pershing. “I didn't know how to climb.”
Word spread and a miracle happened. Friends, strangers and former police buddies contacted Grace on Wings and raised the $15,000 needed to bring Frank home to be with his wife.
“It’s very important to me and my sisters to put them in a room together make peace and have them be in a room together for the time they have left,” Pershing said.
And have one more thanksgiving together. Frank’s Grace on Wings medical flight will land in Indianapolis on Sunday night.
