Once analysts report their findings, forensic scientists will sit down with detectives and the prosecutor to determine what, if any, criminal charges will be filed.
A source also told Fox59 News that evidence from the Nov. 10 natural gas explosion that leveled homes and killed two people in a south side neighborhood is at federal laboratories for examination.
Agents from the ATF are testing evidence from the explosion on Fieldfare Way looking for blast patterns, fire damage, tool marks or anything that will tell them why the house in the Richmond Hill community blew up.
ATF analysts bring an expertise and access to resources that local agencies like the Marion County Forensics Lab don’t have.
"The ATF is one of the best agencies out there when it comes to fire investigation and also explosions and they’ve got good lab people and I just assume that’s probably where they’d send it," said Novack.
Novack said that it could take weeks or months before those federal scientists are ready to tell investigators what they know about the fatal blast.
