Study: Working while pregnant just as dangerous as smoking while pregnant

Indianapolis

We all know smoking while pregnant is bad for babies, but a new study shows working while pregnant could be just as dangerous.

Researchers at the University of Essex in the United Kingdom claim to have found that working into the late stages of pregnancy is just as bad as smoking.

Dr. Maret Cline with St. Vincent’s Hospital said she wouldn’t worry too much about this information, just yet.

"All studies in the past have shown, in a safe working environment that's not too physically or emotionally stressful, women can work up until their due date without any complications.”

Alison Lomellin has two little boys.

“I didn't even think about taking the time off before because it was more important to have the time afterwards.”

Lomellin said that even after hearing about the study, she wouldn’t do anything different.

“For me, it was important to have as much time as possible after he was born so we could bond, spend time together, get to know each other a little bit because it's a bummer when you have to go back to work.”
