The number of counterfeit Super Bowl XLVI merchandise seized during ‘Operation Fake Sweep’ has increased since last week.
Federal agents, backed by NFL investigators and local police, have seized a total of $5.12 million worth of counterfeit NFL merchandise.
Police said the operation resulted in the seizure of 50,703 Super Bowl-related memorabilia and other counterfeit items. Additionally, police said 22,570 items of counterfeit merchandise and clothing represented other sports leagues, including Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League were seized.
In total, police said the operation took 73,273 phony items with a worth of $6.69 million.
Approximately 386 websites were also seized in the operation. Police said 16 of the websites illegally streamed live sporting telecasts over the Internet, including NFL games. Other websites seized sold counterfeit merchandise.
