Crews work to finish Super Bowl Village before grand opening Friday

It's a super transformation as downtown turns into Super Bowl Village

Indianapolis

Several pieces are coming together to complete the construction of Super Bowl Village in downtown Indianapolis Monday.

“I just really can’t believe it,” said Gloria Cortez, who was visiting with her husband. “It’s unbelievable.”

Visitors to Indianapolis are already making the Super Bowl Village a tourist stop.

“We’ve been here before, we’ve driven these streets, but all this assembling and the zip line, it’s pretty impressive,” said Mike Cortez, a visitor from Green Bay, Wis. “I think the fans, when they get here in a few weeks, are going to have a good time.”

A good time is the goal for the Super Bowl Host Committee.

In the final days before Friday’s grand opening, organizers said construction is on track.

"It's really neat to go from artist renderings and just ideas to what's out there now,” said Susan Baughman, vice president of Hospitality and Events. “You can actually see the size and scope of what we're building. This is a massive undertaking and I think people will be surprised to see what we were able to do and how much there is to do."

Crews are completing one of the most anticipated parts of the Super Bowl Village Monday.  It is the towers which will be used for the zip lines.

“I like heights, so for me, it was a thrilling picture to see,” said Baughman. “But for some people, I think they’ll have to think about it, ‘Am I brave, can I do it?’ but it’s a really cool view to see.”

Fans will get to warm up in the fire and ice catering tents, or try out their football skills on the mini field. There are also two stages up where 74 bands will be performing free concerts.

“It’s gonna be interesting,” said Jamie Owens, who works downtown. “I’m questioning whether you’ll be able to see the stage from way back further, but I think it’ll be a fun time going down there as long as we can all stay warm.”

Baughman said there is still work to do on Super Bowl Village before it opens Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. but she said she is confident it will be finished on time.
