A teacher assistant who was walking to school was robbed, according to detectives.
It happened around 7 a.m. Thursday, across the street from Fall Creek Academy where the teacher assistant works.
Shanae Gatewood said she had parked her car because she was dropping her son off, when Carlucci came up to her, asking for help.
"I had just pulled up, about that time she was running past me like 'Ma'am, please call the police'," Gatewood recollected. "I said 'What happened'? And, she was like 'I had just got mugged'. She said, 'I had my purse on me as tight as I could'. Whoever it was, he kinda yanked her down, and you know, she was an elderly lady. It was kinda hard for her. She couldn't really protect herself.”
Fall Creek Academy Principal Rick Hunt said the teacher assistant did not recognize nor did she know who may have attacked her
"I think it's sad,” said Gatewood. “Everybody's doing bad at this time and age right now and we need to stick together, instead of trying to down, you know, each other and hurt each other.”
A detective searched the neighborhood next to the school. According to IMPD, the victim saw the man go between houses -out of her sight. Gatewood said she tried to chase after him. Detectives said he got away with about $300 worth of her belongings, including her cell phone. Gatewood said it was dark Thursday morning.
"It could of been me and my son,” said Gatewood. “It could have been anybody -even the kids 'cause it was kids out, during the time that it happened.”
Principal Hunt said this year is the teacher's first year as a staff member. She substituted before. He said she works as a learning guide with the elementary students. Today was the last day before students, parents, and teachers were dismissed for fall break. Principal Hunt said people should be aware of their surroundings. He said the school has cameras, but because this happened across the street, they did not capture it.
The teacher was taken to Methodist Hospital where they said she was listed in good condition. The police report indicated she complained about back pain and pain to her right elbow.
