Thieves hit several storage units at the Storage Express on South Belmont Avenue on the city’s south side Wednesday night.
Cut padlocks littered the storage lot Thursday. Police said thieves with bolt cutters randomly hit storage units looking for whatever they could carry off and quickly sell.
“It looks like they've been through just about everything that's in here,” said victim Dave DeMuth.
DeMuth said he’s renting a unit to store his daughter’s furniture. She just graduated from law school.
“They pulled this padding off here and got into this hope chest,” said Demuth.
He is not sure exactly what was stolen. DeMuth was waiting for his daughter to look at the mess.
Surveillance video caught the thieves in the act. There are two suspects, an older man and a younger man in hoodies. The cameras also caught their car on tape. All of the video was sent to the Storage Express headquarters in Bloomington. About 19 units here were hit. They used bolt cutters to cut into the fence in two difference places.
Mark Auberry's unit was hit last year.
“They had to pry the lock completely off the hinge,” Auberry said.
But they skipped over his unit this time.
“I was just coming to check out things and everything's here on mine so good day for right now,” Auberry said.
The day was not so good for DeMuth and his daughter who are taking inventory of the stolen items and prepare to file an insurance claim.
