A large portion of an even larger tree broke off its trunk and fell atop a house in Indianapolis, nearly crushing the resident inside Tuesday.
The Indianapolis Fire Department tells Fox 59 News that the 25-year-old woman who rents the home was in bed when the tree sent drywall flying into her head.
IFD said the 911 call came in at 4:35 a.m., a little more than one hour after the resident's dog awoke and barked "like crazy."
After checking the backyard for a possible intruder, IFD said the resident went back to sleep. Later, she realized to what the dog was trying to alert her.
Several old trees line the 7200 block of Fitch Avenue near 71st St. and Keystone Ave. IFD could not pinpoint why the large clump of branches fell.
The house, valued at roughly $100,000, is considered a total loss by IFD, but fire crews said the insurance company would make the final determination.
The victim refused medical treatment and declined comment to our crew.
"She has a little bump on her head and she's shaken up," IFD public information officer Bonnie Hensley said. "But she's really glad that - her dog was on the bed with her - that they both are okay."
