The superintendent of the Tippecanoe School Corporation released a statement Friday, following the announcement of new lawsuits being filed in connection with the Lawrence Township swim coach case.
The attorney representing a young girl sexually victimized by her swim coach held a press conference Thursday to announce the filing of a new sexual abuse lawsuit against Indiana Swimming, USA Swimming, Indiana Swimming and Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township.
The new lawsuits stem from the conviction of former Lawrence Township swim coach, Chris Wheat. Wheat admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with the then 14-year-old victim and was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Attorney Jonathan Little announced a Lafayette teacher and swim coach, Amanda Cox, who allegedly knew about Wheat’s actions and did nothing to prevent them.
The woman’s texts were used in the Wheat trial.
"Good catch, now put her back in the lake and chalk it up to experience. Smile about it occasionally and upgrade to college or vacation with the boys," one text read.
Superintendent Dr. Scott D. Hanback said the school is reviewing the allegations against the female teacher.
Hanback offered no comments into the allegation but said the school is conducting an internal investigation.
The superintendent released the following statement Friday morning:
“Tippecanoe School Corporation is informed of a recent civil complaint in Marion County. The complaint is reported to address misconduct by a former swim coach who was convicted and is incarcerated in Marion County. The complaint includes allegations against others concerning their reporting duties. Among others, the complaint names a swim coach who is currently employed by TSC as a teacher and coach. TSC is reviewing the allegations. TSC has no comment on the merits of the allegations at this time. The allegations have generated extensive media and public attention. To the extent facts surrounding these allegations may address any TSC personnel matters; TSC is conducting an internal investigation.”
Cox’s attorney contacted Fox59 Friday afternoon. Her attorney said Cox did contact the West Lafayette Police Department who she believed then contacted Indianapolis police.
The attorney said his client later spoke with an IMPD officer several times over the phone and gave a recorded statement. Additionally, the attorney said Cox received a notice from the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office stating she was a potential witness in Wheat’s case. However, she did not have to testify because of the guilty plea Wheat entered.
The attorney told Fox59 she took a personal day and is learning more about the civil suit and allegations. Cox said she does not believe she broke the law. She said she hopes things continue as normal for her teaching and coaching roles once the school’s investigation is over.
