Gallagher is charged with wire fraud by depriving citizens of her honest services, extortion under color of official right and bribery in connection with a program receiving more than $10,000 in federal money; Gallagher is accused of receiving $12,500.
The Federal Complaint accuses Bev Gallagher of the following: extortion, wire fraud and bribery. A breakdown:
In 2005, Gallagher meets with undercover officers posing as businessmen wanting to school construction contracts. Gallagher told them "they could make a lot of money together."
In one meeting, she stuffed $2,000 in a day planner. In another, she brought her own envelope to a meeting, handing the agent an envelope she told him "you may want to see." Gallagher left with $1,500.
Gallagher helped steer a $71 million building contract for Hollywood Hills High School to a company that supposedly would hire a subcontractor represented by the undercover agents.
When the contract was awarded to them, she met with the agents at a Mexican restaurant to celebrate. The agent told Gallagher that they were going to make a lot of money. She mouthed: "I know."
