SOUTH BEND — Whether you could knock down buckets with ease, or hit nothing but the actual net, everyone was welcome at Marian High School’s gym on Saturday, to raise money for a good cause.

"It's for the OI foundation, which is Osteogenesis Imperfecta," said 15-year-old freshman Emily Voorde. “That’s the disease that I have, it's a brittle bone disease. They've had a lot of accomplishments trying new research for different medications for strong bone growth."

Emily organized the wheelchair basketball tournament, which pitted teams of students against the River City Rollers.

"It's a team just in South Bend," Voorde explained. “It's made up of all different ages and different disabilities."

The event raised over $300.

“Since I'm a freshman and people are just starting to get used to me in the halls, I've had a lot of positive reinforcement about this. A lot of my friends are making teams or say they'll come out," she said.

Emily and her fellow rollers are proof that sitting in a chair doesn't mean spending life on the bench.

"I come and see all of my friends' sports and now they can come and see mine!" she said.

If you want to try your hand at wheelchair basketball with the rollers, they meet at the Newman Center on Tuesday nights.
