SOUTH BEND (AP) — South Florida, which gained attention this past season when it rose to No. 2 after starting the season 6-0, will play the Fighting Irish at Notre Dame Stadium in 2011.

The game is not part of Notre Dame's previously announced plan to play three Big East teams a season starting in the 2011 season, John Heisler, Notre Dame's senior associate athletic director, said Wednesday.

The game against South Florida is a one-year deal. The three games Notre Dame agreed to play against Big East opponents will be home-and-home series, Heisler said.

Notre Dame, a longtime football independent, is a Big East member in most other sports.

South Florida, which just started playing football 11 seasons ago, joined the Big East in 2005.
