BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana University has boosted security for school President Michael McRobbie following the resignation of former men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson.

Although there have been no specific threats against McRobbie since Sampson resigned Friday, school officials said they are being cautious in light of the trouble that came after the September 2000 firing of former men's basketball coach Bobby Knight.

Hours after Knight's firing, thousands of students rushed to the residence of then-President Myles Brand, setting fire to trees and burning effigies of Brand. Police arrested several protesters and used riot gear to control the crowd.

"Basketball fans are a strange lot. You never know whether people are going to be happy or upset or pushed to some kind of action," said IU police Capt. Jerry Minger.

He said officers have stepped up their protection not only at McRobbie's Bloomington residence, but also in Indianapolis and his office at IU's Bryan Hall.

Minger said the sentiment after Sampson's resignation in a $750,000 buyout amid accusations he committed five major NCAA allegations wasn't the same as that which greeted Knight's firing.
