INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Carmel had more than enough weapons to handle defending champion South Bend Washington and high-scoring Skylar Diggins.

Chrissy Steffen scored a Class 4A record-tying 31 points and Danielle Havel added 16 points and 14 rebounds Saturday night as the Greyhounds rolled to an 84-72 victory in the highest-scoring game in Indiana high school girls basketball history.

It was the first girls' title for Carmel, whose 84 points tied the 4A record Washington set last year. The 156 combined points broke the record of 155 set by Castle and South Bend Washington two years ago.

Diggins, the state's scoring leader at almost 30 points a game, hit her first shot, a 3-pointer. But she missed the next five against a double-teaming Carmel zone defense. She finished with 25 points but made only 9-of-28 from the field and missed three big free throws early in the second half that could have cut into the Greyhounds' lead.

Lauren McRoberts and Ashlee Spearman added 14 points each for Carmel (23-4). Havel also received the Indiana High School Athletic Association 4A mental attitude award.

Takoia Larry finished with 24 points for the Panthers (23-3), who were playing in the championship game for the third straight year and seeking their second straight title.

Washington trailed only 43-39 at halftime and came within three points early in the third quarter but missed 11 straight shots from the field.

Carmel took its first 10-point lead at 56-46 on a basket by McRoberts midway through the quarter. Diggins, who had then missed six straight shots, finally scored late in the period, and she hit another 3-pointer in the closing seconds to pull the Panthers within 62-56 going into the final quarter.

The Greyhounds finally started pulling away in the fourth quarter and took their biggest lead at 84-68 in the closing seconds.

Steffen had seven points in the first quarter and added five more early in the second period, and the Greyhounds took a 22-16 lead before Diggins scored again.

The Panthers came within 24-22, but a basket by McRoberts and a basket and free throw by Havel gave Carmel its biggest lead of the first half midway through the period. Washington then went on a 13-4 run, tying the game on a layup by Diggins and regaining the lead briefly on two free throws by Larry.

There was one more tie before two straight baskets put Carmel ahead for good.

The 28 shots by Diggins tied the Class 4A record she set last year.
