Costs for Mackey Arena renovations more than expected

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — The renovation and addition to Purdue's Mackey Arena will cost at least $17 million more than the original estimate.

"One of the issues that we have to address that took them by surprise was asbestos in pipe insulation and walls," said Joe Mikesell, Purdue's vice president for physical facilities.

Also, the building doesn't have enough power being fed to it to handle the addition once it is complete. There were also problems with having enough parking for events while the renovations are going on, drainage issues and price increases from inflation.

Instead of the $82.4 million price tag university officials were first expecting, the project now will cost at least $99.5 million, according to estimates presented at a trustees committee meeting Thursday.

Morgan Olsen, executive vice president and treasurer for Purdue, said about $32 million for the project is coming from private donations, $2 million from premium seating revenue and increased concession sales in the arena, and the rest from revenue generated through the Big Ten Network.

It is expected to be completed before the 2011-12 basketball season.
