INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kenyans Lamech Mokono and Valentine Orare were both declared the winners of Saturday's 500 Festival Mini-Marathon after a review of photos and video showed that they crossed the finish line at the same time.

Both men had an unofficial time of 1 hour, 2 minutes, 53 seconds to complete the 13.1-mile race in the first tie in its 32-year history, race officials said.

Mokono was declared the winner shortly after the finish, but an hour later race official Don Carr said Mokono and Orare crossed the finish line at the same time.

Carr said both winners would share identical first-place cash prizes, which top out at $3,500 for first place, according to race documents.

The initial declaration of Mokono as the winner was based on the microchip he carried with him. The chips, issued by race organizers, are used by all racers to determine when they cross the start and finish lines.

Before declaring the co-winners, race officials reviewed a TV station's videotape, photos taken by photographers for The Indianapolis Star and other images from people at the finish line. The runners appeared to make contact with each other just before crossing the finish line.

Janet Cherobon, Acworth, Ga., was the top women's finisher with an unofficial time of 1:14.10. She last year won her first outing at the Mini.

Thousands of runners who took part ran the course under cool and cloudy conditions that officials said were ideal for the race.
