IU head football coach Bill Lynch was in South Bend Tuesday as part of the College Football Hall of Fame's Gridiron Legends Luncheon Series.

In light of recent events, the well-traveled coach is truly the Hoosier ‘Lynch’-pin!

Just like the great Johnny Cash, Lynch has been everywhere — in Indiana anyway. For over 30 years, one way or another, Lynch has coached football in the state of Indiana — at Butler, Ball State, Depauw and now at IU.

His next destination is to get the Hoosiers to the next level.

"We've just got to get better. We certainly don't want to put any numbers on what we need to achieve this year because as 'Hep' always said when you do that you only put limitations on yourself. That's why we really have used the approach we're going to get better today," Lynch told WSBT Sports.

It's easier said than done, especially considering the tragic set of consequences that Lynch and the program were dealt after former head coach Terry Hoeppner passed away almost a year ago.

"His famous poem 'Don't quit' that he had hanging on the meeting room wall — it's not very often that a guy could really live it in front of 105 college kids so all the way to the end our kids saw him and what he went through and it was a great inspiration for them," Lynch said.

Now it's Lynch's turn to build a better day for Hoosier football.

A much awaited win over Purdue, seven wins overall, and a bowl appearance are spurring that notion on.

"Now we've just got to keep going," Lynch said. "We've got a very favorable schedule, we've got eight home games for the first time in Indiana history so we've just got to build upon last year."
