SOUTH BEND (AP) — A high school linebacker from New Jersey has verbally committed to play football at Notre Dame starting in the fall of 2009.

Carlo Calabrese, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker from Verona, N.J., said Thursday he chose the Irish over Boston College, Rutgers and Florida. He is the fifth player to commit to the Irish for the 2009 season.

"I like hitting kids," Calabrese told the South Bend Tribune. "That's my favorite thing."

CSTV recruiting analyst Tom Lemming described Calabrese as someone who loves to play football.

"He's got a great football mind and a great football attitude," Lemming said. "He's the type of guy you're going to have to plug him in somewhere just because of his attitude. Very aggressive, good football instincts."

NCAA rules prohibit coach Charlie Weis and his staff from commenting on recruits until the national signing day Feb. 4.
