South Bend and St. Joseph County honored Daytona 500 winner and South Bend native Ryan Newman’s accomplishments with a new city sign. The county also dedicated a section of Lincoln Way between Lexington and Mayflower in his name. (WSBT photo) SOUTH BEND — We know he likes to speed. But that didn't stop a South Bend racer from slowing down for a special award. The city and county honored Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman’s accomplishments with a new city sign. The county also dedicated a section of Lincoln Way between Lexington and Mayflower in his name. “It's an honor to be here,” Ryan Newman said. “I thank all the people for coming out and [I'm] really kinda wondering if we can up the speed limit in that section. I saw it was 45. Maybe we can just do 54, something just a little bit faster." “The amount of pride ... in this community for you Ryan, you've even converted my 70-something mother to a NASCAR fan," said County Councilman Randall Przybysz.
