BOURBONNAIS, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears wide receiver Marty Booker is trying to prove you can go home again.

Booker was traded to the Miami Dolphins from Chicago in 2004. He's not only back with the Bears this season after signing in free agency, he's in the middle of a training camp battle for a starting spot as Chicago tries to replace lost free agent receiver Bernard Berrian.

"I always keep in my mind everything comes full circle," Booker, 32, said Monday. "The good thing about it is it did. I don't feel anything different. It's just like I was going on a vacation for a little bit."

Booker said he kept his Chicago-area home after being traded to the Dolphins. He set the Bears receptions record of 100 in a season (2001) before being traded to Miami for defensive end Adewale Ogunleye.

"I just remember how it all went down — it was a shock," Booker said.

"Just a sour moment at that point, and then the next thing you know, I was on a plane headed to Miami, trying to adjust down there," Booker said. "It was tough at first, but you just have to roll with it."

Booker went from being the Bears' main receiving threat to a secondary receiver for a franchise about to embark on turmoil with four head coaches in four years — Dave Wannstedt, Jim Bates, Nick Saban and Cam Cameron — and a 20-44 record.

"It wasn't a good situation down there because all my four years down there it was like a coaching carousel," Booker said. "It was like coaches in and out from head coaches to offensive coordinators. It's hard to get adjusted or acclimated to anything like that when you don't have stability or anything."

Only 18 players remain on the current camp roster from Booker's last Bears training camp team, including veterans like Brian Urlacher and Mike Brown.

"It's pretty much the same old Marty in our book," Brown said. "He's a little wiser now that he's been in the league nine years, a smooth route runner and his hands are what separates him from others — they're huge."

With Booker, Devin Hester, former Redskin Brandon Lloyd, Mark Bradley, Rashied Davis and rookie Earl Bennett, the Bears expect to employ a wide receiver by committee approach rather plan for anyone to produce 60 or 70 receptions.

"You shouldn't have a guy who goes out there and has to play 70 plays a game," wide receivers coach Darryl Drake said. "That should be split, keep guys fresh, keep guys ready."

Booker said he's looking forward to Thursday, when the Bears open preseason at Soldier Field against the Kansas City Chiefs.

"Right now we're just out there practicing, trying to get a feel for one another and get a little chemistry going in this offense so we can be pretty good this year," Booker said. "I'm quite sure once Thursday rolls around, and then as we get on later into preseason games and (the) regular season I'll figure out what that role is."<

NOTES: Lightning cut short the Bears morning special teams practice, then a tornado warning for Kankakee County caused an end to the night practice at Ward Field after only an hour. ... Return man Devin Hester was given Monday night's practice off. ... Guard Chester Adams returned from the non-football injury list and a stomach ailment to practice for the first time. ... Tackle Chris Williams (back) and guard Terrence Metcalf (knee) remained sidelined.
