BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Tom Crean has the job security he wanted as Indiana's new basketball coach.

More than four months after accepting the Hoosiers job, Crean signed a 10-year deal worth at least $23.6 million, with additional stipulations to cover season tickets to men's basketball and football games, travel costs for his wife and children to road games and the use of two cars — all at university expense.

School officials made the announcement Tuesday, the same day the university released details of the contract through a public records request.

"I left a very special situation at Marquette when Indiana offered me this opportunity," Crean said in a statement released by the athletic department. "I wanted to make sure that if I left, I would be going to a place that would be a destination for my family and allow me to build a program for the long haul with the same security."

Athletic department spokesman J.D. Campbell said Crean would not make any more comments on the deal Tuesday.

Crean will receive a base salary of $600,000 per year through the duration of the contract and get additional payments, starting at $1.4 million this season with slight increases over each of the following nine years, for outside income.

In addition, Crean could earn up to $685,000 in bonuses if he wins a national championship.

The breakdown includes $125,000 for a Big Ten regular-season title and $125,000 if the Hoosiers reach the Final Four.

When hired in April to replace the ousted Kelvin Sampson, Crean agreed to an eight-year contract, but the university added two more years last month before he even coached his first game in Bloomington.

Sampson and his assistants are accused of making more than 100 impermissible calls while Sampson was still under NCAA sanctions for a previous phone-call scandal at Oklahoma before he was hired by Indiana in 2006.

Sampson has repeatedly denied he was knowingly involved in improper calls at Indiana and disputed the NCAA's contention that he did not tell investigators the whole truth.

The NCAA in June added an allegation that Indiana had failed to monitor the basketball program, a charge IU President Michael McRobbie promised to fight vigorously. The NCAA has not yet ruled on the case.

Since February, the program has undergone a major housecleaning.

Indiana bought out Sampson's contract for $750,000, and athletic director Rick Greenspan, who hired Sampson, has announced he will resign in December. All but two players from last season's roster have either transferred or been kicked off the team.

Crean's contract includes a provision that allows Indiana to fire him if he or his staff commit NCAA infractions.

"The process of restoring this great program is going to take a lot of time, more than probably any of us anticipated," Crean said.
