Oliver resigns as ND defensive line coach

SOUTH BEND (AP) — Jappy Oliver has resigned as defensive line coach at Notre Dame after four seasons.

Oliver resigned "to pursue other opportunities," Brian Hardin, the school's director of football media relations, said Thursday. The Associated Press left a telephone message seeking comment for Oliver at his home.

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said after meeting with athletic director Jack Swarbrick last month that changes were needed after two disappointing seasons. Neither Weis nor Swarbrick would specify those changes, although media speculation centered on the staff.

Swarbrick decided at that meeting to allow Weis, who has seven years left on his contract, to return for a fifth season.

Oliver, 53, was one of the original hires when Weis was named head coach at Notre Dame. Oliver also previously coached at South Carolina, Air Force, Vanderbilt and Navy. He played wide receiver at Purdue from 1975-77.

He is the second assistant coach from the past season's staff to leave. Offensive coordinator Mike Haywood was named head coach of Miami of Ohio.
