SOUTH BEND — The price of a Notre Dame general admission football ticket is going up $3 for the upcoming season.

The price for a general admission ticket will be $68 for each of the seven 2009 home games, the university announced in a recent letter to alumni, parents and friends of the university.

The $3 increase for 2009 was part of a ticket pricing plan adopted in 2003, Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick wrote in the letter. "Mindful of the extraordinary difficult economic climate, we have carefully considered whether the scheduled increase is still appropriate," he wrote.

If the additional revenue from the price increase went only to pay for the athletics program, the increase might have been suspended, according to athletic director.

But each year, proceeds from Notre Dame’s athletics program provide money for the academic side of the university, including undergraduate education and academic research, Swarbrick wrote. "In light of that obligation, we concluded that this modest $3 increase in our ticket price was not merely appropriate in these difficult times, but perhaps even more important than ever so we can continue to support the University’s mission," he wrote.

Swarbrick said the athletics department has instituted cost-cutting measures designed to offset expected decreases in revenue associated with other aspects of the business.
