SOUTH BEND — After a 6-6 season last year, South Bend Clay looks to improve in 2009 with a strong aerial assault.

New head coach Joe Szajko will be calling on senior WR and Notre Dame recruit Danny Smith to help the team battle a tough schedule.

“Obviously we have Dan Smith and it’s no secret that he’s going to ND. He’s a great receiver and so we have a great passing game coming back," says Szajko. "We’ll try to capitalize on that. We’ll try to improve in the other areas that may have not been as strong.”

Smith is coming off a knee injury, but says he’s itching to get on the field.

“The rehab is going good. I tore my meniscus, but it’s just my cartilage so it’s alright. The surgery was successful, just taking it week by week right now," Smith told WSBT Sports. "We’re hard workers and we strive to win. That’s really our goal this year, to try and go out there and win every game. One day at a time.”

Clay opens the regular season, not on a Friday night, but Saturday August 22, when they host NIC foe South Bend Washington, in a non-conference game.
