SOUTH BEND -- Notre Dame backup quarterback Dayne Crist will undergo surgery on Friday and miss the remainder of the season.

The sophomore suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in the fourth quarter of last Saturday's 40-14 victory over Washington State. Irish coach Charlie Weis said Tuesday that Crist will be out 4-6 months.

Weis hedged when asked if Crist will be able to go through spring practice.

"We will definitely be conservative," Weis said. "Whatever we have to do to have him ready for August, that's what we'll do."

Starter Jimmy Clausen, who is battling through a turf toe injury, and backup Evan Sharpley are the only scholarship quarterbacks on the depth chart. With Sharpley moving from third-string to second-string, the third-stringer now becomes reserve receiver John Goodman, who caught a touchdown pass from Crist in last Saturday's game. Goodman, who will also remain at receiver, played quarterback in high school.

"We have to knock off some of the rust," Weis said Tuesday during his weekly press conference. Notre Dame hosts Navy on Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium.

The news isn't all bleak. Receiver Michael Floyd, out since the Sept. 19 Michigan State game with a broken collarbone, has been cleared to play. Floyd led all Football Bowl Subdivision wideouts with a 29-yard average per reception and was tied for the nation's lead in receiving touchdowns with four.

His return gives Notre Dame a vaunted receiving corps as junior Golden Tate has excelled. Tate has five 100-yard receiving games in ND's first eight games.

In other injury news, receiver Robby Parris also is expected to play, and defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore, who suffered an ankle injury in last Saturday's game, is listed as probable.

Running back Armando Allen, out last week with an ankle injury, is day-to-day, and starting offensive guard Trevor Robinson, who suffered an ankle injury in the WSU game, is doubtful. Dan Wenger gets the start in place of Robinson.

Sharpley saw his first action of the season in Notre Dame's 40-14 victory over Washington State last week. He did not throw a pass in the game.

Sharpley played in three games in 2008, attempting just five passes. He saw his most extensive action two years ago, playing in eight games, starting two.

Crist had played in four games this season and threw his first career touchdown moments before the injury, hooking up with Goodman on a 64-yard strike.

Navy enters with a 6-3 record after a 27-24 loss to Temple last week. Quarterback Ricky Dobbs did not play two weeks ago against Wake Forest and sparingly against Temple but is listed as the starter for this week.

"I expect him to be back in there," Weis said.

Notre Dame enters at 6-2 and is ranked 19th. Kickoff is set for 2:42 p.m. and the game will air on NBC.
