SOUTH BEND — Bowling has always been at the center of many family get-togethers. The same can be said, and then some, for WSBT’s Burger King Outstanding High School Student Athlete.

The sport of bowling is a well respected tradition in the Medich family.

"Growing up under the training of my dad Val, Sr., I had the best trainer in the world. A lot of times people ask him the question, 'Who's a better bowler — you or your son?' and his answer is that, 'Well, he had a better teacher,' and that's a fact,” said Val Medich, Jr., long-time area bowler.

The game has been passed down from generation to generation — most recently to Riley High School's Jon Medich. Jon is a three sport athlete and maintains a 3.0 grade point average.

"In the fall I play football, in the winter it's bowling and in the summer it's baseball. It’s pretty difficult, but I think I have a good hang of it. I pretty much just go home, study a little bit, and then go to practice. Then I have another practice,” said Jon.

"I'm really proud of him. He's a good baseball player, a good football player. He's a good bowler … he could be. He's a little stubborn like his dad though," said Val. "There's a lot of times my dad would give me advice and I wouldn't listen to it because I was a little bull-headed and I knew more than he did. I'm starting to realize that now with my son, now that he's in high school I try to help him out with his bowling and a lot of times he seems to know more than I do."

"I'll never be able to walk in my dad's shoes as far as what he's accomplished in the sport of bowling. Hopefully Jon will surpass us both,” said Val.
