NILES — The Niles softball team is number one in Division 2 for many reasons.

Reason number one might be because of our Burger King Outstanding Student Athlete.

Niles junior Jenna Ignowski, a member of the First Team All State, has a mean set of pitches.

"[She's a] quality pitcher, quality athlete, quality person,” Niles head coach Gary Collins told WSBT Sports. “She's just everything a coach would want."

Jenna is 23-1 with 311 strikeouts and 10 walks over 159 innings. She’s only allowed 5 runs and has 20 shutouts.

"It's a single sport, but it's also a team sport and I really like that because you can do good for yourself and you can also do good as a team member,” Jenna said. “I like to work hard for myself, but also to do good for other people because that’s very motivating.

Her 3.8 GPA proves she also stays motivated when it comes to grades.

"She's an all-A student right now and we've got four of them that are all-A students,” Collins said. “Smart teams win, and we preach that at Niles."

"I take some pretty tough classes but I try my best,” Jenna said. “If I don't get something then I get tutors.”

Jenna's already verbally committed to pitch at Eastern Michigan. She says the school was exactly what she was looking for.

"Everyone always says to you, ‘When you step on a campus, you know exactly that where you’re going to go, that’s where you’re supposed to go’ and when I stepped on campus I loved it,” Jenna said.

But the Vikings opponents aren't out of the clear yet: This junior still has two more seasons to sizzle on the mound for Niles.

Congratulations to Jenna Ignowski, the Burger King Outstanding Student Athlete of the Week!
