Tara Lonergan and Sydney Henderson each scored 10 points to lead host Mount St.Mary's to a 51-39 win over LIU Brooklyn on Monday night that clinches a spot in the Northeast Conference women's basketball tournament.
After a sluggish start to the first half, the Mount scored five points in the final minute to take a 19-17 lead at the break. Jessie Kaufman drained a 3-pointer and Henderson scored a basket in the paint to give the Mountaineers (13-14, 9-7 Northeast Conference) their only lead in the opening half.
An 11-4 run to start the second half gave the Mount a 32-23 advantage with 14:08 remaining. Jacqueline Brewer started the run with a 3-point basket. Rachel Mathews and Lonergan added buckets ahead of a pair of free throws by Henderson to give Mount St. Mary's a nine-point lead.
From there, the Mount methodically pulled away, stretching the lead to 46-30 with 3:58 left on a 3-point basket by Brewer.
The Mountaineers are currently in fifth place in the NEC standings, one game behind St. Francis (N.Y.) and Monmouth.
Howard 40, UMES 35: The host Hawks (7-17, 3-10 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) nearly pulled off another comeback, getting within one possession late in the game, but couldn't quite get over the hump.
UMES held the Bison (17-10, 11-4) without a field goal for the first seven minutes. Howard countered with point guard Cheyenne Curley-Payne, who scored six points in a row on an 8-0 Bison run to give the visitors a 9-6 lead through the first 13 minutes.
But scoring was sparse as the two teams combined to hit four field goals the rest of the half as Howard led 16-11 at the break.
After some back-and-forth play, UMES tried to make its move. Sha-Kiyla Finney went on a personal 5-0 run in less than a minute to get the Hawks within five with 4:45 left.
But the Hawks couldn't complete the upset. A pair of free throws with 19 seconds left sealed the game for Howard.
Men
Howard 49, UMES 45: Anton Dickerson came off the bench to score 12 of his game-high 17 points in the second half and lead the visiting Bison (7-22, 4-11 MEAC) in a come-from-behind win. It was the second straight loss for the Hawks (2-22, 2-11).
Louis Bell and Dominique Cowell led UMES with 14 points each. With 10:50 left in the game, a 3-pointer by Louis Bell gave UMES a 35-23 lead, the biggest of the game.
But Howard went on an 18-2 run, and six minutes later had taken a 41-37 lead it would hold. UMES was able to climb its way back in the game on a 3-point basket by Troy Snyder and a layup by Ishaq Pitt, narrowing the deficit to 46-42 with 27.8 seconds left. But the Bison closed it out with free throws.
