Cubs recall lefty reliever Marshall from Triple A, demote Pignatiello

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Chicago Cubs recalled left-hander Sean Marshall from Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, optioning lefty Carmen Pignatiello to Iowa.

Marshall pitched three hitless innings in his only appearance, a start for Iowa on Friday against Round Rock, striking out six with no walks. He was 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA in seven games for the Cubs in spring training before being optioned to Iowa the day before the regular season.

Marshall spent most of the previous two seasons with the Cubs, going 13-17 with a 4.83 ERA in 45 games, 43 of them starts. He went 7-8 with a 3.92 ERA last season.

Pignatiello pitched only two-thirds of an inning in two appearances, charged with a run on two hits and two walks for an ERA of 13.50.

Chicago manager Lou Piniella said Marshall was recalled because he could give the team more innings if needed. The Cubs used six relievers in a 12-inning game Monday.
