SAN DIEGO (AP) — Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and Greg Maddux and two relievers combined on a four-hitter as the San Diego Padres beat Chicago 2-1 on Wednesday night, snapping the Cubs' nine-game winning streak.

Brian Giles led off the eighth with a double off Ted Lilly (5-5). After he moved to third on a flyout, Kouzmanoff hit his sacrifice fly to center off Carlos Marmol to make it 2-1.

Chicago's winning streak was its longest since 2001. Despite the loss, the Cubs (38-22) still have the best record in the majors.

Maddux was masterful for San Diego, yet had nothing to show for it. Maddux, ninth on the all-time wins list with 350, allowed one run and three hits in seven innings. The 42-year-old threw just 69 pitches before he was lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh.

The right-hander faced only three batters in six of his seven innings. It was the 51st time in his career that he did not allow a walk when pitching at least six innings.

Maddux has not won in five starts since getting his 350th victory on May 10 against Colorado. He has one loss and four straight no decisions since.

The Padres have won each of Maddux's last four starts.

Heath Bell (3-3) pitched a perfect eighth and Trevor Hoffman faced four batters for his 12th save in 15 chances and the all-time leading 536rd of his career.

The Cubs, the top scoring team in the majors, had 52 runs and 95 hits during the winning streak. In the first two games against San Diego, Chicago combined for 16 runs and 25 hits.

Scott Hairston led off the first inning with his eighth homer.

Alfonso Soriano had a leadoff single for Chicago in the fourth. He stole second and went to third on Ryan Theriot's single. Derrek Lee drove in the run with a sacrifice fly.
