The Florida State Seminoles, the reigning national champions, were an overwhelming No. 1 to repeat in the preseason coaches poll Thursday.

FSU received 56 of 62 first-place votes in the Amway Coaches Poll released by USA Today.

"We're very excited about being No. 1 and happy to be No. 1, but we understand that we have to play like No. 1 and play great football," Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher told USA Today Sports. "That's going to be our objective. We're proud to start there and now we just have to go play great football.

"There is no added pressure. Our goal every year is to win the national championship. That's why we're at Florida State."

Last season Florida State ended the Southeastern Conference's seven-year stranglehold on the title with a 34-31 victory over Auburn in the BCS Championship in January.

The Seminoles return seven defensive starters and eight starters on offense, including Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston. They begin their championship defense Aug. 30 against Oklahoma State.

The SEC will have strong contenders for the inaugural four-team College Football Playoff, leading the way with seven teams in the top 25, including two in the top five: No. 2 Alabama and No. 5 Auburn.

The first regular season poll will be released Sept. 2.

The College Football semifinals will take place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Jan. 1. The national title game will be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Jan. 12.
