THURMONT, Md. — J.T. Root pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts Monday for North Hagerstown in a 9-2 MVAL Antietam victory over previously unbeaten Catoctin (4-1, 3-1).

Phil Pietro, Charles Cvijanovich and Alex Courtney each had two hits for North (5-1, 4-1).

Nigh helped his own cause with two doubles and a two-run homer, Tyler Reese had three hits, including two doubles, Chad Lowry had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs and Colin Poyle had two hits for the Eagles (3-0, 3-0).

Levi Hartsock had a two-run homer and Justin Swogger had a solo home run for Calvary.

COLLEGE TRACK

Gussio wins 2 events

EMMITSBURG, Md. — Mount St. Mary’s freshman Coby Gussio, a Boonsboro graduate, took first place in two events Saturday at the Mountaineers’ Eric Kloiber Invitational.

Gussio won the 100-meter dash in 10.88 seconds and the 200 in 21.58. He also contributed to the third-place 4x400 relay and placed fourth in the long jump (21 feet, 7 1/2 inches).

Teammate Scott Rice, another Boonsboro graduate, tied for first in the pole vault at 13-3 1/2.

Hagerstown Community College also competed at the meet.

For the HCC women, Whitney Murphy placed third in the 100 (13.34), eighth in the 200 (27.26) and teamed with Jasmine Reynolds, Victoria Broadhurst and Ashley Smothers to place third in the 4x100 (52.63).

Kenny Kopp placed third in the high jump (6-2 1/4) for the HCC men, while Mike Salguero was fourth in the 5,000 (15:54.49), Prince Dawkins was seventh in the 200 (23.30) and Rodney Flora was eighth in the 200 (23.78).

Smothers, Kopp and Flora also are Boonsboro graduates.

Rams’ Minnich honored again

PRINCETON, W.Va. — Shepherd senior first baseman Nathan Minnich, a Waynesboro graduate, was named the WVIAC Player of the Week for the third time this season.

At the plate, Minnich went 8-for-11 with a home run and six RBIs as the Rams (17-11) won three of their four games.
