For the first time in program history the Notre Dame men's soccer team is headed to the College Cup.
The Irish defeated Michigan State 2-1 on Saturday night in the NCAA quarterfinal round. Notre Dame had made it to this round two previous times, but never to the final four.
On a cold, snowy evening, the Irish struck first. After a corner kick, Evan Panken scored in the 30th minute to give ND a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Patrick Hodan added a goal two minutes into the second half before Jay Chapman brought the Spartans back within one in the 58th minute.
Patrick Wall totaled four saves for the Irish.
The College Cup is in Philadelphia this year. Notre Dame will face New Mexico on Friday, December 13. Fellow ACC members Virginia and Maryland meet in the other semifinal.
