Former Notre Dame pitcher Jeff Samardzija is one step away from the big leagues.

The Valparaiso native was called up to the Chicago Cubs Triple A affiliate in Des Moines Sunday night.

Samardzija struggled throughout the month of May at Double A Tennessee but recently had pitched much better. Over his last five outings, Jeff pitched 27 1/3 innings while allowing 14 hits and 8 runs.

In 16 games, Samardzija had a 4.86 ERA in 76 innings.

Samardzija will be inserted in the Iowa Cubs starting rotation and will make his first start on Tuesday.

The former Notre Dame pitcher and wide receiver was a fifth round pick by the Chicago Cubs in 2007. Samardzija signed a 5- year minor league deal with the Cubs worth up to $16.5 million if an option year is exercised.

Samardzija at Iowa will be teammates with Granger native J.R. Mathes.

Well that's because we only care about who has a big name around here, and who graduated from Notre Dame. Pretty pathetic isn't it?

not that you'd know it from local news media, but there's another local boy, Eric Stults of Argos, also a Bethel graduate who actually IS playing in the majors - started last week against the Reds in Cincinnati and will start Wednesday against the White Sox. Very disappointing that South Bend media has zero coverage!
