Holtz always required discipline and detail

NOTRE DAME --- Lou Holtz can tell a great story, and he did just that during his weekend stop in South Bend as part of the Blue-Gold game festivities.

Holtz told of a time in 1986 when he first addressed his team. Center Chuck Lanza wasn't ready for the discipline and detail that Holtz has always commanded.

"I kicked his foot and asked him how long he's played football. He said six years --- and I said if he wants to play one more day he better sit up straight. There are two reasons to have a meeting: to gather information and disperse information. I'm not the greatest speaker in the world. Consequently, when I walk in, I want you to sit up in your chair, I want both feet on the ground I want your hands on your knees. I want you to look at me," said Holtz.

"It's nothing complicated. Sit up. You want me to draw it up here on the greaseboard? After a while they started slouching, but it's just something I require. It's the way I feel," added Holtz.

Holtz didn't leave South Bend before picking former Irish players to make up a team he'll take to this summer's Japan Bowl. The former Irish coach will also return later this summer to be Enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame.
