Mike Brey Hosts 4th annual Basketball Banquet

SOUTH BEND -- Where else could you get away with wearing sneakers with a tuxedo?

At Notre Dame men's basketball coach Mike Brey's 4th annual BasketBall Benefit Saturday night, it was not only allowed, it was part of the dress code. The benefit, which took place at the Morris Performing Arts Center, was to raise money for the American Cancer Society and the Notre Dame Coaches vs. Cancer program.

Last year the event raised nearly $75,000, with a majority of the funds helping people right here in Michiana.

Despite the recent economic downturn, Coach Brey expects to raise just as much this year through an evening full of dinner, dancing, and a silent auction.

"Obviously, the economy is down a little bit, but our numbers are right about the same," Brey said, "It tells you that for the really special things, people are going to come out and be there in support."

Mike Brey and his wife Tish have raised over $1.5 million for Coaches vs. Cancer since coming to South Bend.
