Cincinnati tight end Alex Welch has become the fourth member of Notre Dame's recruiting class of 2010.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Welch, who will be a senior this fall at Elder High, picked the Irish over Ohio State. Welch averaged 15 yards per catch on 32 receptions as a junior and had four touchdowns.

Welch joins offensive lineman Christian Lombard, wide receiver Daniel Smith and linebacker/defensive end Chris Martin in the class.

Welch is the nephew of former Irish linebacker Steve Heimkreiter, and is a good friend of current ND tight end Kyle Rudolph, who also played at Elder. Welch is ranked as a four-star recruit by CBS College Sports Network analyst Tom Lemming.

NCAA recruiting rules prohibit Irish coach Charlie Weis and his assistants from publicly commenting on a recruit until the player signs a national letter-of-intent. Signing day is Feb. 3.
