SOUTH BEND - Notre Dame baseball star AJ Pollock was drafted in the 1st round of the major league baseball draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Arizona drafted Pollock 17th overall, equaling the highest an Irish player has ever been taken in draft, matching Ken Plesha (1965, Chicago White Sox) and Brad Lidge (1998, Houston Astros), both chosen 17th.

"It's a great thing for our program. Great for AJ. He deserves it," says Notre Dame baseball coach Dave Schrage.

"Actually, I was watching (the draft) with great anticipation and leaped off the couch when he got announced because its exciting for everyone involved."

Pollock could be assigned to the South Bend Silver Hawks, the class-A affiliate of the Diamondbacks, which would allow him to begin his pro career here in Michiana.
