NOTRE DAME - Jimmy Clausen has vaulted to the forefront of the Heisman trophy discussion. He's also being considered a top prospect for the NFL.

Charlie Weis went through this process a few years back with Brady Quinn, following a breakout junior season in 2005.

Couple that with Weis' experience in the NFL and the Notre Dame coach has a pretty solid perspective on what Clausen's decision comes down to.

"In Jimmy's case, if you move yourself up so high in the draft that its an offer you can't refuse, then you have to seriously consider it", Weis says.

"But I think that you never want to walk away from a Notre Dame education unless that were presented to you."

It's too soon to tell just how good the prognosis will be. Multiple draft sources have Clausen as a top-5 QB, and a potential top 20 overall pick.

Draft guru Mel Kiper has him listed right behind current Heisman winner Sam Bradford, as the #2 draft eligible junior.

The draft is no sure thing. But this much, Weis knows is true.

"I'd love to have Jimmy here for this year and next year."

And if he doesn't...

"If he ends up playing so well this year that it warrants him making that decision (to enter the NFL draft), then that probably would be a good thing for the success of our football team this year."
