SOUTH BEND — With 1-6 Washington State awaiting his Notre Dame football team this week, the phrase "trap game" was quickly mentioned during Charlie Weis' weekly press conference.

Weis, his team 5-2 and ranked 25th, listed three points of emphasis for his heavily favored team.
First, it's Notre Dame's first off-site game, a home game for the Irish in terms of TV rights and revenue. Saturday night's game will be played at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Second, three of ND's starters -- offensive guard Chris Stewart, defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore and kicker Nick Tausch -- are Texas products.

Third, and most important, Weis wants to see improvement.

"If we want to do something special this year," Weis said, "we really need to get better across the board. It's one of those situations where we're going to go down there and be ready to go. This is the next opportunity for us to get better."

Weis listed receiver Robby Parris, who was banged up in the USC game and re-injured in last Saturday's Boston College game, as doubtful for the Washington State game.

Running back Robert Hughes, who got knocked in the head on a goal-line play against BC, passed a cognitive test and will practice today.

Weis will have a number of recruits on hand, particularly current juniors. Notre Dame can give recruits tickets to the game but cannot talk to them.

"In that sense, it's not really like a home game," Weis said.

Notre Dame will play Army at new Yankee Stadium in New York in next year's off-site game.
In the only previous meeting between Notre Dame and Washington State, the Irish were a 29-26 overtime winner in the 2003 season opener.
Saturday's game will kick off at 7:42 p.m. (Eastern) and airs on NBC.
